Course Description
This course acquaints undergraduate students with some of the key texts in English in the sixteenth century. It begins with selections from the first printed English biblical texts as a means of laying an important foundation for an understanding of sixteenth-century culture, before continuing with examples of History, Poetry and Drama that helped to lay the foundations for subsequent literature in the English language.

Course Objectives
This course will provide students with a broader and deeper understanding of sixteenth-century text and culture.
It will be a valuable foundation for the study of subsequent literatures in English.
It will be an essential course for all students who wish to pursue research in the Early Modern period by acquainting them with the complex issues out of which the literature emerged and to which it contributed.

Requirements:
Students must circulate e-mail comments based on their reading of the texts in advance of class each week to enable richer in-class discussion. They must submit a portfolio in week 9 and a research portfolio and paper in week 18.
